What is broaching and when is it used?

Broaching is a machining process belonging to the metalworking domain, involving precise and productive operations. The main tool used is called “broach”, a toothed object which removes material in order to create a whole. Although broaches are pretty expensive and require a lot of maintenance, this process is still extremely frequent in the automotive manufacturing industry. According to their movement, there are two types of broaching commonly used: linear and rotary. The first one is the most popular, being found in many fields: the broach is operated by an automatized machine and moves linearly on the surface of a given work piece, thus creating a cut and partitioning the material. The second type has as a main movement rotation and uses a rotary broach, a tool which is pressed into the surface in order to cut a certain shape, most of the times a symmetric one.

The process of broaching is extremely efficient, because the cut is executed after only one move. For this reason, it also requires a lot of precision and needs to be used for difficult cuts. Sometimes, complex and odd shapes need to be cut through this method: these may include circular holes, sophisticated lines and so on. The most common work pieces include screws, forgings or different sized castings, which are often produced in a huge volume, for commercial and industrial purposes. Taking into consideration that the rotary broach is very fast and performing, the whole cycle takes up to 20 seconds, being thus also very profitable for those who make it.


Which are the main characteristics of a broach?

This efficient piece of equipment is a metallic tool consisting in multiple edges and progressive cutting teeth, which is why only a single pass is enough to cut the work piece in a few seconds. Internal cutting is generally made with a cylindrical machine, through compression, while plain and external cuts are obtained through traction. However, the broaches can be crated differently, depending on the purpose for which they are about to be used. It is highly important for the tool to be made of resistant material, which is why most of them are made of high speed steel or tungsten carbide, but the latter material is less common.
